The animals are kept in spacious, landscaped enclosures, separated from the visitors by dry or wet moats. The moats are concealed with vegetation or dropped below the line of vision. In the case of dangerous animals such as leopards and jaguars which can climb very well, moat barriers are not used. Instead, these animals are housed in beautifully landscaped glass-fronted enclosures. Oppressive cages which typify old zoos, are absent. The end result is a feeling of openness.

The Singapore Zoo was opened in 23 June 1973. Spread over a land area of 28 hectares, the Singapore Zoo was created as an Open Zoo concept - animals live in spacious and landscaped enclosures simulating that of their natural habitat.Singapore Zoo shows

The Singapore Zoo is taking this further by evolving towards an Open, Learning Zoo experience. Instead of just watching the animals, there will be educational content designed in an interactive mode such that facts about the animals and messages about wildlife conservation are more effectively conveyed.

You can find a total of 290 animal species, 21% of which are threatened species. Be one of the 1.3 million visitors that goes through the zoo's gates every year.
